Itinerary 4 Days Marrakech to Erg Chigaga Desert Tour

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Zagora

Your Marrakech to Sahara desert tour begins with pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. After leaving the city, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the most scenic mountain routes in Morocco.

Along the way, enjoy panoramic views, Berber villages, winding roads, and changing landscapes as you travel from Marrakech toward southern Morocco.

The journey continues to Aït Ben Haddou, a historic fortified village known for its earthen architecture and dramatic setting. This stop gives the tour a strong cultural beginning before the landscapes become more desert-like.

After visiting Aït Ben Haddou, continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara. Depending on timing, there may be a short stop for photos, lunch, or a visit in the area.

In the afternoon, continue through the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s most impressive palm-filled valleys. The road follows ancient kasbahs, oasis landscapes, and desert villages before reaching Zagora.

Spend the night in a comfortable hotel, riad, or kasbah-style accommodation in Zagora.

Day 2: Zagora – Draa Valley – M’Hamid – Erg Chigaga Desert Camp

After breakfast, continue deeper into southern Morocco toward M’Hamid, the last village before the open desert.

The road passes through dry landscapes, palm groves, old kasbahs, and small desert communities. This part of the route gives travelers a clearer sense of the transition from oasis life to Sahara desert scenery.

After reaching M’Hamid, the paved road ends and the real desert adventure begins. From here, continue by 4×4 across desert tracks toward Erg Chigaga.

Erg Chigaga is known for its remote atmosphere and wide desert landscapes. Unlike easier-access dune areas, reaching Chigaga requires off-road travel, which makes the experience feel more adventurous and less crowded.

Upon arrival near the dunes, enjoy time to relax, take photos, and experience the silence of the Sahara. Depending on timing, you can enjoy a camel trek or walk on the dunes before sunset.

As the sun goes down, the dunes change color and the desert becomes calmer. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner at the desert camp and spend the night under the Sahara sky.

Day 3: Erg Chigaga – Desert Tracks – Lake Iriki – Foum Zguid – Taznakht

Wake up early to enjoy sunrise over the Erg Chigaga dunes. This peaceful moment is one of the strongest highlights of the tour.

After breakfast at the camp, begin the off-road journey across desert landscapes toward Lake Iriki and Foum Zguid.

This route offers a different view of the Sahara: flat desert plains, fossil areas, dry lake scenery, rocky tracks, and wide open spaces. It is one of the reasons Erg Chigaga feels more adventurous than standard desert routes.

The 4×4 drive continues through remote landscapes before reaching Foum Zguid, where the road becomes more connected again.

From there, continue toward Taznakht, a town known for traditional carpets and southern Moroccan craftsmanship. Depending on timing, there may be opportunities for short stops and photos along the way.

Spend the night in Taznakht, Ouarzazate, or a comfortable accommodation on the return route, depending on the final arrangement.

Day 4: Taznakht – Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech

After breakfast, begin the final return journey toward Marrakech.

The road passes again through southern Moroccan landscapes before reaching the Ouarzazate region and then climbing back into the High Atlas Mountains.

This final day gives travelers one last chance to enjoy mountain views, traditional villages, and scenic stops before returning to Marrakech.

The route through Tizi n’Tichka offers wide views and a strong contrast between the remote Sahara landscapes visited earlier and the green mountain scenery closer to Marrakech.

Arrival in Marrakech is usually in the late afternoon or evening, where the tour ends with drop off at your accommodation.
